About Tryon / Columbus

Tryon, NC was incorporated in the late 1800’s as the Spartanburg / Asheville Railroad came to the area. Many of the historic buildings on Trade Street, as we know it today, were in place by 1900, including a general store, a pharmacy, and a post office. Tryon quickly grew as a resort town, bringing tourists to the area to enjoy mountain views and a relaxing climate. A fine mix of locals, retirees, and artists continue today to create a vibrant, active community. The local equestrian community began with the help of Carter Brown, who organized the Tryon Riding / Hunt Club and the 1st Blockhouse Steeplechase in the 1940’s.  During the late 1800’s-early 1900’s, Tryon was well known for its table and wine grapes. Due to prohibition, these family-owned businesses dried up over time. Beginning in the early 1990’s, this interesting part of Tryon’s history was revived as grapes were planted for winemaking. A dozen or more vineyards now lie about 10 miles to the east in the Tryon foothills. Stroll down Trade Street and enjoy the shops and restaurants, SideStreet pizza is calling your name!! Catch a movie at the Tryon Theater or a performance at the Tryon Fine Arts Center. Have a picnic at Harmon Field and peruse the local antique stores.  Columbus is the seat of Polk County, founded in 1855. Columbus has remained a small community, retaining several interesting buildings from its past. The historic courthouse, finished in 1857, is one of the oldest still in use in North Carolina. The brick, columned Board of Education building was one of our first schools. Both properties have park areas that host town festivals throughout the year. The one-block downtown features local businesses, restaurants, and an Inn. Scenic drives abound around Columbus, whether you drive along the base of White Oak Mountain, or take the winding road 1,000+ feet to the top for spectacular views.  Speaking of White Oak Mountain, you have to see the newly developed White Oak Plantation Golf Course. This Arnold Palmer layout is one of the finest golf communities in the Southeast, so nice that PGA Tour Member and multiple major winner Padraig Harrington will soon call White oak “ home.” The opportunity to purchase a homesite and build your dream home at White Oak is just one of the many attractive real estate offerings in this area. You get the best of both worlds when you purchase real estate in the Tryon / Columbus area --- live 30 miles from Asheville, however real estate is much more affordable in this area the weather is much more compatible to a year-round lifestyle. Land is still plentiful in this area, perfect for the construction of new housing.  Washburn Real Estate, Inc. is a leader in Tryon & Columbus homes for sale, condos for sale, land for sale, vacation homes for sale, second homes for sale, golf community homes for sale and New & Custom-built homes for sale in Tryon & Columbus.
